GREENGUARD Premier Certification Program
-
GREENGUARD Premier℠ Certification is a comprehensive health-based product certification program that is presently in its pilot stage. The program incorporates existing stringent indoor air quality criteria with additional health-based chemical emission requirements and content requirements for critical chemicals. The new program uses exposure assessments that address both primary uses of a product in home, office, healthcare or school environments and specialized areas within these environments.

Overview of Criteria
By combining key criteria for formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions from established indoor air quality programs, including California’s Section 01350 and GREENGUARD Children & SchoolsSM Certification, with additional guidelines on toxic substances from internationally established public health agencies, the new program guides manufacturers in meeting today’s holistic market needs. Key elements added to the new health-based standard are additional guidelines for acute exposure, short-term assessment of reproductive and developmental toxins and control of critical pollutants including lead and phthalates as outlined by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) requirements for children’s products. The new pilot program offers an integrated and stringent approach to controlling indoor sources of environmental pollutants for all environments. Key monitoring is also being conducted to specialized classes of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Data obtained will assist in determining if emissions criteria should be developed for this subset of chemicals.
How to Participate
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is piloting this new program with manufacturers currently participating within either the GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification program or the GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification program. The GREENGUARD Premier program is the foundation of GREENGUARD’s ANSI standard that is currently under development, which seeks to identify a comprehensive health-based standard for acceptable emissions from building materials, finishes, furnishings and processes used in commercial, residential, educational and healthcare environments. The new program will be open to all interested parties. Manufacturers may contact their GREENGUARD account manager for additional details.
