GreenGuard Indoor Air Guardian

November 2010

Over the last several decades, sweeping technological advances in the manufacture of building products have afforded the design community a plethora of new and exciting materials, expanding the aesthetic and structural possibilities of buildings like never before.

Unfortunately, in our culture’s haste to mass-produce “bigger and better” products, the building industry, government, and other regulatory bodies appear to have overlooked the potential health impacts of these products—and, subsequently, the buildings people inhabit.

The problem stems from the continuous introduction of new and unregulated chemicals (most of which have not been studied for their human health impacts) into the marketplace. Out of more than 100,000 chemicals in commerce, only 200 have been tested for their toxicity since the 1970s. The rest have been, and continue to be, pumped into the products and materials that people use on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this puts the architectural specifier in the precarious position of having to vet products for their chemical safety.
