The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) became an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) authorized standards development organization (SDO) in 2004. The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute focuses its development efforts on creating critical, leading edge environmental standards to protect human health. Accreditation by ANSI signifies that the policies and procedures used by GEI in connection with the development of American National Standards meet the ANSI essential requirements for openness, balance, consensus and due process.
In April 2009, GEI published its first ANSI approved American National Standard for mold and moisture management during new construction, ANSI/GEI – MMS100. This standard provides a practical framework by which moisture intrusion is controlled throughout the life cycle of a building. By leveraging the nation’s experts on this important topic, GEI hopes to improve architects’, designers’ and builders’ understanding of the potential impact that moisture intrusion can have on a building and to protect the health of building occupants.
