GREENGUARD Brings Indoor Air Quality Home
GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) recently celebrated its fifth anniversary of promoting safe and healthy indoor environments. Looking back on its first five years, GEI sees the most important change is the shift in environmental interest from commercial buildings to homes. Homeowners are now leading the demand for healthier indoor air, seeking product solutions to their everyday problems.

GREENGUARD 2007 Program Updates
In managing the GREENGUARD Certification Program, GEI recognizes that manufacturers are navigating through many sustainability requirements. To help ease the process, GEI has been working hard to identify opportunities that better align GREENGUARD with other standards and requirements. GEI is pleased to formally announce that our efforts have yielded some positive programmatic updates, which include:

  • Update in ventilation rates used in modeling
  • Adjustment in air sampling
  • Changes in furniture testing submissions

Green Building Guidelines Specify GREENGUARD

Indoor air quality continues to be a significant component of green building guidelines. As demonstrated by the USGBC's latest LEED for Schools rating system and the newly released Green Guide for Health Care Version 2.2, credits for low-emitting materials have been expanded and GREENGUARD Certified products are referenced as a strategy for achieving these credits.

LEED For Schools
The USGBC demonstrates its commitment to promoting indoor air quality with several revised credits that specify low-emitting products. Products that carry the GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification can be used to achieve the following LEED EQ Credits for Low-Emitting Materials: Adhesives & Sealants, Paints & Coatings, Flooring Systems, Composite Wood & Agrifiber Products, Furniture and Furnishings and Ceiling and Wall Systems.

Green Guide For Health Care
An industry-recognized rating system that is being used as a foundational document for developing LEED-NC for Healthcare, the GGHC references GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certified products to achieve the following EQ credits: Interior Adhesives & Sealants, Wall & Ceiling Finishes, Flooring Systems, Furniture & Medical Furnishings (this also meets EP Credit 5).

As new green building guidelines are released and existing programs are revised, GREENGUARD Certified products remain an important strategy for improving indoor air and achieving valuable credits.
